The island of Maui is nicknamed the Valley Isle and offers an opportunity to experience the verdant valleys and sweeping vistas. From easy to challenging, we’ve collected a list of diverse trails located near our West Maui vacation rentals. And we included a bonus suggestion, too! These trails are all self-guided, so please mālama ‘āina (take care of the land), know your limits and be respectful of all signs, precautions, and warnings.

Once the capitol of the Hawaiian Kingdom, this walking tour of Lāhainā Town will give you a fascinating glimpse of culture, history, and landmarks within a small radius. Begin your tour with a map from the Lāhainā Restoration Foundation and discover sacred spaces, interesting places and even prison cases.

Pali means cliff and this trail has an elevation gain of over 1,500 feet through steep rocky hills. It’s a challenging hike, but rewards experienced and fit hikers with beautiful views of Haleakalā, neighboring islands and the central valley isthmus and both coasts of the island.
Lāhainā Pali Trail - All Trails InfoLength: 4.0 miles

On a beautiful sunny day, the Waiheʻe Ridge Trail rewards experienced hikers with lush scenery and sparkling ocean views from ridgeline hiking. It’s a steep trail that can get slippery in the West Maui Forest Reserve, but offers views of the Makamakaʻole Falls from a distance.

This trail delivers stunning coastal views through rugged lava fields and the beautiful award-winning beaches of D.T. Fleming Beach Park, Oneloa Bay and Kapalua Bay. You’ll be walking on pavement, rocky lava, sandy beaches, and dirt so wear the proper foot attire.
Kapalua Coastal Trail - All Trails InfoLength: 20 miles
Level: Challenging
Make advanced reservations to take a shuttle to the start of the trailhead and hike through rugged terrain of what once was coffee and pineapple fields of the former Honolua Ranch. It’s a strenuous hike, but you’ll reach the Maunalei Arboretum with incredible valley views of Mokupeʻa and Honokahua.
Mahana Ridge Trail - All Trails InfoLength: Approximately 0.5 miles
Level: Easy
The iconic ʻĪao Needle is in central Maui, west of Wailuku. Families will appreciate this paved pedestrian path that leads you directly to the sight and has beautiful views of the valley.
ʻĪao Valley State Monument - All Trails InfoLength: 4.2 miles
Level: Moderate
Start at the Kapalua Village Center to access a network of six trails along golf cart paths at the former Village Golf Course. Depending on which trail you choose, it could be easy to difficult. Hike to the top of the trail to a hidden lake and panoramic views.
Kapalua Village Walking Trail - All Trails InfoLength: Approximately 0.5 miles

To get to this trail, travel to the Wailuku – Waiheʻe side of the West Maui mountains. The Makamakaʻole Falls Trail leads to the lower falls and the Makamakaʻole Stream Trail takes you to the upper falls through 13 stream crossings. These trails can be overgrown, narrow, and slippery, but what rewarding views!

The Kā‘anapali Beach Walk is a paved sidewalk along the Kā‘anapali Beach Resort, past luxury resorts, spas, restaurants, and the shops at Whaler’s Village. The south side starts at Hanakaoʻo Park to Black Rock, while the quieter north side starts near The Honua Kai Resort & Spa.
Kā‘anapali Beach Walk - All Trails InfoLength: 1.2 miles
Level: Easy
Named after the shrub that grows on the trail, this short trail along Papanalahoa Point provides unique views of the Kahakuloa Head and safe viewing distance of the Nākālele Blowhole. The trail to the overlook is paved, while the loop trail is not.
‘Ōhai Loop Trail & Overlook - All Trails InfoLength: 0.6 miles

The Ke‘anae Arboretum is not located in the West Maui mountains, instead it is located about the halfway point on the Road to Hana. At this six-acre botanical garden, stop to see over 150 varieties of tropical plants, fruits, flowers, and trees. But we lead you here to see the exotic Rainbow Eucalyptus trees, noted for their multi-colored tree trunk. Because we’re always Chase ‘N Rainbows!
